Support That Makes a Difference
Internal Family Systems
-
In Internal Family Systems (IFS), we gently recognize that we are made of many parts—different inner voices and presence within us, each holding its own feelings, burdens, and ways of trying to protect us. Some of our parts carry heavy, old pain. Others work tirelessly every day to manage our lives so that pain never has to touch us again.
-
And then, when the ache becomes too heavy and threatens to flood us, special guardians step in to shield us from being overwhelmed. In IFS, we call these our firefighter parts, formed early in life when better coping tools weren't available, these parts act out of extreme urgency and fear. They arrive in moments of deep inner distress, doing whatever it takes to offer us comfort and keep us safe. When painful emotions break through our defenses, these parts step in to "put out the fire" through immediate distraction or escape—such as binge-watching, emotional shutdown, substance use, or compulsive scrolling.
-
While often judged as shameful or destructive, firefighter parts act out of fear: their sole mission is to protect us from overwhelming pain we previously couldn't handle.
-
Instead of fighting or shaming firefighter parts, IFS cultivates curiosity and compassion toward them. By showing up as a calm inner leader (the Self), we build trust with these exhausted protectors, eventually allowing them to step down and let safer ways of healing take over.
